Description

Building sustainability performance metrics. Modelling, measurement and survey methods for sustainability assessment and rating of buildings. Design, management and operational strategies for improving building sustainability.

This is a research-led and advanced professional practice course which applies sustainability principles to the assessment of new buildings, and to the design of retrofits of existing buildings. Sustainability assessment is an essential part of building design. The course develops knowledge and critical understanding of sustainability principles, assessment methods and metrics, and their use in the integrated design of new buildings and retrofits. Learning includes reviewing key recent peer-reviewed literature, conducting design projects and a critical analysis of sustainability assessment tools.

The course covers the following topics:

•Sustainability principles and assessment frameworks
•Sustainable building design principles and practices
•Building carbon footprint and energy efficiency
•Life-Cycle Assessment
•Green building rating tools

Learning Outcomes

  • A student who successfully completes this course should be able to apply advanced sustainability principles to:

  • Critically assess and clearly communicate key issues and limitations related to the sustainability assessment of buildings and their components, including social, environmental and economic dimensions.

  • Research, evaluate and implement sustainability assessment methods appropriate for use in sustainable building design practice.

  • Integrate the use of sustainability assessment tools into building design practice.
