The course aims to educate students on the basic and creative concepts of advanced energy technologies and its systems integration. By covering the different areas of emerging technologies from fossil fuel conversion, ultraclean fuel production and utilisation, solar photovoltaic conversion to hydrogen and energy storage, the course prepares students for these revolutionary technologies. Importantly, rather than focusing solely on ultimately renewable energy solutions, the course incorprates the complementary views of fossil but ultraclean fuel technologies, as well as their importance as intermediate energy solutions.

Processing technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas, liquid fuel as well as heat and power from various energy resources including traditional fossil fuels and renewable resources (such as biomass); energy related environmental issues and analysis; energy system optimisation; energy storage technologies and systems such as mechanical, electrochemical (batteries), and thermal energy storages.

Topics include:
• Energy storage such as mechanical, electrochemical (batteries), and thermal energy storages (5 L);
• Natural gas production and steam methane reforming (5 L);
• Liquid fuel production and refining of crude oil (4 L);
• CO2 emissions and mitigation (1 L);
• Hydrogen, syngas and liquid fuel from biomass and organic solid wastes (8L);
• Energy system analysis and optimisation (2 L).

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, the students are expected to:
  • Understand issues and potential opportunities in energy sector.
  • Understand the technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas and liquid fuels from biomass and organic solid wastes.
  • Understand the technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas, liquid fuels and energy from natural gas and oil as well as related CO2 emission issue.
  • Understand the technologies and systems of energy storage.

30 lectures, 3 assignments and end of semester examination.  Assessment completion and special consideration: Students should submit the assignments on required dates and time. Any delays without approval by the lecturer(s) will incur a penalty with exact mark reduction depending on the days of delay. Completion of all assessment items is a requirement for passing this course.

ENGR404. This is a required course for energy minor in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering. However, if the energy minor certificate is not required, students without taking ENGR404 may also be allowed to take ENCH483 with approval of Director of 3rd Pro Studies.

ENCH483 is an optional 3rd Professional course however, it is required for students who want to receive a certificate of energy process minor.

Assessment and grading system

Completion of all assessment items is a requirement for passing this course. Students may apply for special consideration if their performance in an assessment worth 10% or more is affected by circumstances including illness, bereavement, and some sporting events. If students are unable to complete assessment items worth less than 10% of the course, or feel that their performance was or could be impaired, they should contact the course coordinator for special consideration. Such requests should be made before the assessment completion date - requests after this time will only be considered under special circumstances. Students prevented by circumstances from completing the course after the final date for withdrawing, may apply for special consideration for late discontinuation of the course. Applications must be submitted to the Examinations Office within five days of the end of the main examination period for the semester.
