COURSE TITLE: URBAN STORMWATER MODELLINGA water sensitive city manages its water in a way that enhances sustainability, resilience and liveability. Effective urban water management needs to respond to a variety of challenges, including climate change, population growth, resource constraints and rapid urbanisation. As a component of urban water management, effective stormwater management addresses a wide range of opportunities such as reduced flood risk, diversified water sources, pollution prevention and treatment and the role of blue-green infrastructure in enhancing urban spaces. Models are powerful tools than can inform decision-making, design and strategic planning for better stormwater management. The effective application of stormwater models requires a sound understanding of the principles and engineering science that underpin the modelled relationships. This course will provide an overview of: relevant processes of urban hydrology, design flows, stormwater collection systems, stormwater management systems, stormwater modelling, pollutant generation processes, pollutant transformation and removal processes, pollutant load modelling to guide stormwater management decision-making. The course is relevant to industry practitioners and researchers, with workshops and hands-on labs to provide further practical context.
1 Describe urban stormwater system components and predict the interactions, impact and conflicts between components.2 Describe urban hydrological process relevant for stormwater management.3 Explain stormwater pollution issues and identify their key sources, behaviour and treatment processes.4 Apply urban stormwater modelling tools to assess flows in the urban system for selection of effective flood control measures.5 Evaluate relative contributions of stormwater pollutants across an urban area, using pollutant load modelling tools.6 Design stormwater collection and management solutions for flood resilience and climate change adaptation.
