Description

Loads and load paths in buildings and bridges. Design calculations for timber and steel structures. Engineering drawing. Construction and testing of simple structures.

The course is designed focused and uses most of the technical knowledge learnt in previous courses. At the end of the course you will be familiar with the structural design process and able to design timber structures in a simplified manner. The course consists of two design projects: a simplified bridge design which includes concept, detailed design

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes - bridge design project:

1. Aesthetics, Art Innovative structural form design considering and historical context constraints
2. Choosing the optimal structural form of the bridge, i.e. minimize material waste
3. Understand impact of loading on bridges and calculation methods such as influence lines
4. Building and testing small scale models to understand the overall global stability and performance
5. Understanding the materials to be used and engineering connections
6. Calculate and write a full detailed design report that includes key structural elements
7. Development of professional structural drawings
8. Bridge construction and management
9. Use of rendering software and Augmented Reality
10. Bridge testing and validation of detail design.

Learning outcomes - building design project:
1. Understanding load paths in a building structure under gravity loads and horizontal loads
2. Estimating the loads on building structures based on NZ load standards
3. Get familiar with ultimate limit state (ULS) design & serviceability limit state (SLS) design
4. Calculating strength demand
5. Designing beams, columns, walls and bracing systems
6. Engineering drawings of buildings
