ENGL442 provides an opportunity for BA (Honours) and first-year MA students to study areas of interest not otherwise available as 400-level courses. Students work independently under the direction of a staff member. They are required to read prescribed primary and secondary materials, to undertake assigned research tasks, and to produce two or more essays or other written exercises (with a total length of about 10,000 words) on specified dates. ENGL442 differs from the Research Essay (ENGL480) in that it focuses on an area or field of study rather than a specific topic and the required work more closely resembles what is expected for a taught course. Students may be allowed to base their study on a level-200 or -300 English courses that they have not already done; in this case they attend lectures and undertake additional work as specified by the course coordinator. Students who enrol in ENGL442 in the first semester must have their work completed by July 1. Those doing the course in the second semester must complete it by November 1.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award
Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.
Subject to approval of the Head of Department.
