Description

The Creative Writing Project provides an opportunity for B.A. (Honours) and first-year M.A. students, particularly those who have completed some or all of the undergraduate creative writing pathway, to undertake an extended creative project under supervision. This may take the form of a long story, a group of stories, a collection of poems, a short play, or another form to be negotiated.

ENGL481 provides an opportunity for B.A. (Honours) students to advance their development as creative writers by undertaking the writing of a short fiction project (a single long story or a collection of short stories), a collection of poetry or a one-act play, or a similar project.  It also offers Honours students enrolled in literary-critical papers the opportunity to extend the range of their abilities, and consider the possibility of entering the M.F.A. (Creative Writing).  ENGL481 aims to introduce students to the rigours, disciplines and challenges of creative writing at length in a chosen genre.  It represents a significant new stage above undergraduate creative writing courses, the designing of an extended project with the attendant tasks developing, sustaining and resolving plot and theme.  It is expected that students who complete ENGL481 will have a clear understanding of the requirements posed by longer creative writing projects, and of the skills and disciplines required to execute them, and will be better prepared to begin their M.F.A. (Creative Writing) project as a result if they wish.  Students who enrol in ENGL481 in the first semester should have their work completed by July 1.  Those doing the course in the second semester must complete it by November 1.  Entry into ENGL481 is restricted to those who already have advance experience of and skills in creative writing.  Please note that due to a shortage of staff in this area, entry into ENGL481 will be very restricted in 2012.
