Description

Fluid Properties; Fluid Statics; Control Volume Analysis; Mass, Momentum, and Energy Equations; Bernoulli Equation and Applications; Boundary Layer Concept; Pipe Flows and Losses; First and Second Law of Thermodynamics; Evaluation of Thermodynamic Properties; Ideal and Real Gases; Condensable Substances; Heat Transfer Modes; Electrical Analogy.

The intention of this course is to lay the foundation in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer for two courses in Second Professional Year dedicated specifically to fluid mechanics and thermal engineering. This will allow students to master fundamentals before moving on to more challenging topics. This course will also be self-contained and provide sufficient engineering background to students from other programs not pursuing these disciplines any further.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding of the concepts and definitions in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics; fluid statics; mass, momentum, and energy conservation applied to control volumes; the First Law of Thermodynamics for open and closed systems; the thermodynamics properties of ideal and real gases and for condensable substances; Second Law statements and consequences; the different modes of heat transfer; electrical analogy.
  • Understanding of how the concepts and principles introduced apply in the engineering context.
