Description

Fundamental relationships between structure, processing, physical properties and performance for metallic, ceramic, polymeric, composite and electronic materials.

The fundamental relations between structure, processing, properties and performance are introduced for all classes of engineering materials.  This course will lay the foundation for the proposed second professional year course ENME307 (Mechanical Behaviour of Materials).

Learning Outcomes

Students will understand:
 atomic, crystalline and microscopic structure of metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.
 crystalline defects and diffusion
 mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms
 metal forming
 thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations
 solidification processing of metal and plastics
 welding
 heat treatment
 fracture mechanisms and failure analysis
 corrosion
 properties other than mechanical (e.g., optical, magnetic, thermal but mainly electrical and electronic)
 materials selection

Prerequisites

Subject to the approval of the Dean of Engineering and Forestry
