Vibrations of discrete and continuous systems, fundamental and modern acoustics.

This course covers the fundamentals of sound, wave description and propagation, acoustics instrumentation, noise criteria, sound source types and radiated sound fields, outdoor sound propagation, environmental noise and vibration through sound power measurement techniques, sound in enclosed spaces, sound transmission loss, and acoustic enclosures.

    1. Basic acoustic and vibration concepts, Time varying noise and noise indices, The ear and hearing, Sound propagation, Sound absorbers and room acoustics, Transmission of sound.
    Laboratory classes on sound include: wave nature, visualisation, measurement, power, and absorption.
             1.1. Understand and apply knowledge of sound and vibration and its application in various environments (WA1, WA2)
             1.2. Able to measure (practiced in laboratory settings) and predict sound and vibration and the relationship of sound to vibration in various applications (WA4, WA9, WA10) (EIE2)
             1.3. Able to solve “real-world” problems from industry and employ environmental noise control methods (WA3, WA5, WA12) (EIE3)
