Description

Continuation of the study of Mechatronics Engineering as a discipline. In-depth study of sensors and actuators. Lectures and practice of engineering design methods. Comprehensive team project.

Compulsory to 2nd Pro Mechatronics students, this whole year design course aims to teach students design skills. In the first semester, the course teaches students how to do what design engineers do, namely:
• to use innovative and creative skills
• to use engineering communication skills, such as report writing, engineering drawing, and oral presentation
• to apply the science of engineering (learnt in the other subject areas) to real world engineering problems.

It introduces some of the main engineering components and shows how to select them and use them in design.

In the second semester the course aims to advance the students’ knowledge and understanding of mechatronics system design in theory and develop their hands-on skills of design and implementation in practice through participating in Canterbury RoboCup - Search and Rescue Competitions. This second part of the course covers:

• Introduction to Mechatronics and system design
• Sensors and Actuators
• Digital data acquisition, processing and control
• Introduction to computer vision and image processing
• Design concept, system architecture, and evaluation
• Computer programming
• System integration: hardware and software implementation, testing and evaluation
