Description

Design process, mechatronic system modelling, design methodology and tools, creative design, machine elements, mechanical power transmission, sensors, actuators, computer vision, intelligent control.

Compulsory to 2nd Pro Mechatronics students, this whole-year course is intended to teach Mechatronics students how to perform integrated design of a mechatronic system, as well to provide familiarity with some of the key tools and techniques of mechatronics engineering. Emphasis is placed on the mechatronics design process, and the use of introductory material on computer vision and machine intelligence, both of which are considered an important part of mechatronic systems but are not covered in other 1st Pro or 2nd Pro courses. A key aspect of this course is the year-long team design project, which involves designing and implementing a complex mechatronic system, participating in the Canterbury Robocup:Search and Rescue Robot Competitions.

Semester 1 mainly covers:
• Mechanical design
• Mechatronic system design fundamentals
• System design tools

Semester 2 mainly covers:
• Sensors and actuators
• Computer vision
• Machine intelligence

The whole-year project will have staged milestones set for assessment to make sure students keep on track in progress. Its main assessment will be in Semester 2.
