In this course students will explore and experience the creation of artwork specific for children's literature. Over five weeks, students will create a picture book, learning the skills, practices and stages of illustration for children's literature. We will trace the vast and rich history of children’s books, inquire into contemporary practices and developments within the publishing industry, understand a range of media and techniques available, and critically analyse the role and possibilities of visual representation within children's literature.
Hua Ako | Learning objectivesOn successful completion of the course, students will develop:1.Courageously enrich and develop personal artistic language and ideas2.Examine and evaluate historical and contemporary works in children’s illustration3.Identify the processes and stages of book illustration, the picture book industry, and book creation pipeline4.Analyse principles of illustration and picture books, and demonstrate application5.Appraise the role of the illustrator in regards to ethics, representation, and culture.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
Student work hours•Contact time: 30 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures, 2 x 2 hour labs per week)•Assignment 1 (Portfolio + Reflection): 30 hours•Assignment 2 (Reflective Essay): 15 hours•Assignment 3 (Portfolio + Reflection): 75 hoursTOTAL: 150 hoursPlease note: In the week of 2-6 December 2024 there are two fieldtrips. These are optional, you will be given guidelines to complete this work in your own neighbourhood as an alternative for those who cannot come on the fieldtrips.
