Language of Illustration builds upon the base understanding that one of our greatest resources as illustrators is our visual vocabulary - the internalised sources we draw upon as visual reference. This course focusses on building up our individual visual vocabularies through exposure to a variety of subject matters, and approaching these subjects and objects through three distinct illustration approaches: imaginative, reference and memory. Subject matters that will be explored are human form and anatomy, animals, insects, plants, landscapes, sky and cloud formations, space, architecture, machinery, action and expression, cultures and ethnicities, history, and the role of colour within each of these subjects. We will be critically questioning the role and responsibilities of representation in illustration, and diving into forms of representation for different cultures and time periods. This course will also introduce illustration as research method, for research design and creative practice.
