A practical introduction to commonly used statistical methods, designed to increase the breadth of statistical skills. The emphasis is the application of statistical techniques to solve problems involving real data.
The course is designed for students majoring in statistics, as well as students from other disciplines (e.g. biology, commerce etc) who want to increase the breadth of their statistical knowledge base. Common statistical techniques such as sample surveys, experimental design, hypothesis testing and analysis of variance are introduced, with an emphasis on problem solving as applied to real data. The computer package R is used, but no prior knowledge is assumed.Students on this course may also be interested in enrolling in STAT202/FORE224 Regression Modelling/Biometry 1B.
Students will:be able to use R-commander to analyse dataunderstand sampling designs (e.g., simple random sampling, stratified sampling) and experimental designs (e.g., completely randomised, randomised block)be able to conduct statistical analyses using ANOVA and other techniques using R commanderunderstand interactions in two-way ANOVAwriting lab reports in which data are analysed and computer output is interpreted

Students must register on-line for tutorial sessions at the commencement of the course. Instructions on this will be provided at the first lecture and can also be found on-line on the STAT 201 home page. Spaces in sessions of either 12 noon or 1 pm have been set aside for Forestry Science students so that you do not have timetable clashes with other Forestry courses.
