Description

The student will undertake an individual investigation of a subject approved by the School of Forestry and will submit a dissertation on this topic by a date specified by the Dean of Engineering and Forestry.

The dissertation is essentially an independent study of any topic within the broad disciplines of forestry. The topic is chosen by the student in consultation with the dissertation coordinator and the faculty adviser. The student meets with the dissertation coordinator early in the term and then with the adviser as needed.

Learning Outcomes

To develop and apply research skills including the art and science of defining a research topic, data collection and analysis, presentation of data and results, interpretation and application of research results; to synthesize professional training and experience to date in the production of an original research paper of professional standard.

Prerequisites

Subject to approval of the Head of School of Forestry.

Dissertation not to exceed 40 pages of prose (tables, figures, bibliography may be appended). The dissertation will be judged on the basis of topic definition, organisation, information content, analysis, grammar and style, and originality (equally weighted). Topic and name of supervisor must be submitted to the coordinator by end of the third week of the first term.  

The dissertation is weighted 3 times more than other fourth year subjects for honours students.
