Description

Project analysis, forest valuation, risk and uncertainty. Forestry as a business.

The course will cover a number of topics in economic theory and practical applications. The course is designed to extend your knowledge and give you practice at using the tools. There is an emphasis on economic tools to help analyze issues facing managers of commercial forests.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

Analyse policy and economic issues relating to forestry in New Zealand using economic tools and concepts; (Washington Accord WA1, 2; UC EEI3, 4)
Present and discuss the strategic issues facing the New Zealand commercial forestry sector; (WA1, 2; EEI2, 3)
Find and analyse publicly-available data on the forestry sector and the economic environment; (WA1, 2: EEI3)
Analyse the forestry sector in one region of New Zealand and recommend options for future processing based on an assessment of the profitability of processing, the quality and quantity of the local resource and the prospects in New Zealand’s current markets (WA2, EEI1, 2, 3)
