Description

In-depth coverage of all aspects of tropical plantation silviculture from seed production through to harvesting impacts, with emphasis on decision-making.

This paper is only available to students enrolled in the Master of International Forestry (MIntFor) degree.

Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge
    Students will gain advanced technical knowledge in:
  • Growth & yield modelling
  • The influence of silviculture on wood products and forest services
  • Alternative stand-level management techniques
  • The integration of silvicultural decision-making and financial outcomes of forest investments

    Students will gain a critical understanding of key principles of plantation silviculture.

    Skills
    Students will:
  • Be able to set objectives for growing forests and understand the impacts of objectives on management decisions
  • Be able to evaluate different silvicultural strategies for a variety of sites and species.
  • Be required to use the acquired knowledge to address complex stand management problems.

    Application
    Students will:
  • Be able to integrate objectives, silvicultural decisions, design of silvicultural regimes and implementation of growing strategies of plantation stands.
  • Be able to analyse the impacts of adopting alternative silvicultural strategies to meet land-owners’ objectives.
  • Be able to effectively communicate methods, results and conclusions of these analyses.
