Extended field mapping and related exercises aimed at broadening geological experience in the understanding and interpretation of rocks at outcrop, field map, and regional scales.
The field trip is a field mapping exercise at Castle Hill, building on the introduction to geological mapping in GEOL230 and focussing on the structure that builds the Southern Alps and the geomorphology resulting from the recent glaciations. The structural mapping concentrates on the complex folding as being expressed by a limestone unit. The geomorphology part has two components: (1) at Castle Hill structural- geomorph link will be looked at and (2) slope processes and glacial histories will be addressed at either Winding Creek or the Poulter Confluence. The course is designed to complement GEOL351. Field teaching takes place off-campus and a reasonable degree of fitness is desirable.

Field work is set for 14-20 February 2009 at Cass and the surrounding area. A field trip levy of $32 is payable at enrolment. Forms for the catering option are available from Room 108A Geological Sciences Department. This provides 3 meals per day for $15; ($90 in total) payable prior to departure. Please collect the catered field trip option form from outside Room 108A Level 1 corridor von Haast building). Pay $90 to cashier in Registry and return form through slot at Geology Room 108A.The field trip departs 8.30 am Saturday 14 February 2009 from the Geological Sciences loading bay. Bring your lunch and day pack ready for immediate field work.Essential EquipmentStudents will be expected to have a geological hammer, hand lens, grain size comparator, a plastic bag to protect map board and note book. A personal first aid kit is essential for field safety. Safety glasses will be available from Cathy Higgins or Vanessa Tappenden (Room 108A). Boots and a sleeping bag are necessary as is adequate clothing for a range of weather conditions.
