Description

German language course for beginners, i.e. students with no knowledge of German, based on the communicative approach.

GRMN151 is an introduction to German that is especially designed for people with no prior knowledge of the language. The course is run in tutorial-style classes which meet 4 times each week. Our language courses are based on the theory that you learn best by doing. Thus the focus of these meetings is on active student-to-student communication in German as much as possible with supplemental explanations of grammar. Continuous learning is mirrored in the course’s continuous internal assessment.

Expectations:
Students in this language course are expected to attend class 4 times per week and to be ready to participate in everyday conversations and role-playing exercises. This is the most important component of your learning, where you can receive immediate feedback. The course also requires you to do work outside the classroom: Kahoot is used to practice vocabulary and Facebook to practice informal writing. Students are also expected to use the workbook and audio exercises, that are part of the textbook, for personal study.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course you will acquire skills in all four areas of the language-learning curriculum (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course the average student will be able to understand interactions in everyday settings; in addition he or she will be able to name common objects of daily life, to express a range of basic wishes, and to use the present and past tenses to narrate simple events. Reading is a component of the course, and by the end of the semester students will be able to read brief texts and understand the fundamentals of German textual structures. Students will also practice writing intensively and will be able to narrate events and communicate basic information about themselves and their environment. At the end of the course students will have proficiency in German equivalent to level A1 of the Common European Framework and will be able to sit the Goethe Institute examination Level A1.

By learning a foreign language students will develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts. This will help the language students to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.
