Description

This is the first part of a comprehensive language course for students who have completed GRMN 118. The course aims at improving the students' all-round knowledge of everyday contemporary German including knowledge and practice of German language variation.

This course is for students who have completed the former GRMN 118. The course aims at improving the students’ all-round knowledge of everyday contemporary German by offering a balanced programme of practice in all four main language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). In addition, the course will offer an introduction to various varieties of German (formal – informal, written – spoken, regional variation).

By the end of the course students should be able to read, understand and discuss articles from German news magazines and a short work of fiction. Students should be able to write a short essay using newly acquired vocabulary on defined topics of interest. The average student will be able to engage in a discussion on a specified range of topics with moderate fluency.
The course meets three times a week. There will be an additional optional tutorial hour per week for which a schedule of activities ranging from work with videos, songs by Liedermacher and practical exercises in the language lab will be distributed. Blackboard (WebCT) will be used for course management and online exercises.
