Description

This is the second of two intermediate German language courses. This course extends the reading, writing and discussion skills acquired in GRMN251 and places greater emphasis on writing and reading skills, including the reading of short stories.

This course will work on all four language skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will complete regular grammar and writing assignments as well as have ample opportunity to speak and listen in the classroom setting. Throughout we will build on the vocabulary and communication skills acquired in GRMN251 by discussing  contemporary German culture and current events. Students will extend their reading skills by reading a short detective story.

By the end of the course students should be able to read short newspaper and magazine articles and up to medium length fictional texts and understand their content. The average student will be able to engage in conversations with native speakers about every day topics, and will have knowledge of the main grammatical structures of the German language. At the end of the course students should be able to pass the Zertifikat Deutsch examination of the Goethe Institute.

The course meets four times a week. Three of the hours are devoted primarily to work with the textbook. Wednesday class meetings are sometimes held in the Language Lab.

This course leads on to GRMN351 Advanced German Language A, a new course to be introduced in 2009.

Prerequisites

GRMN251 or a placement test. Note: The course assumes a relatively high level of proficiency in German language. Even well prepared high school students should therefore enrol in GRMN251.
