The course aims at the extension of vocabulary and structures of a higher stylistic level also in the grammar classes. Closer attention is also given to correct spelling and punctuation. Students will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course students will have developed advanced reading skills such as understanding an average length German novel. Students will practice writing intensively and should be able to write essays and give presentations on topics from fictional books, films and current social and cultural developments in the German speaking countries. For practicing essay writing and extending reading skills the short novel "Selbs Mord" by world famous author Bernhard Schlink, an interesting mix of a crime story and the author’s dealings with the German past, will also be read. The average student will be able to speak and give his/her opinion on more abstract topics in a coherent and understandable way. Students’ listening comprehension should reach a level where they can understand the argument in a shorter debate on academic and cultural issues. Grammar revision will focus on transformation exercises which should demonstrate students’ comprehensive knowledge of German grammar. This course leads on to GRMN311 Advanced German Language B.
