Description

This advanced course for students who have completed GRMN 211 aims at the extension of vocabulary and structures of a higher stylistic level. In addition students' reading and writing skills will be enhanced through work on a longer fictional text and articles related to cultural and historical topics.

The course aims at the extension of vocabulary and structures of a higher stylistic level also in the grammar classes. Closer attention is also given to correct spelling and punctuation. Students will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). They will write essays and give presentations on topics from fictional books, films and current social and cultural developments in the German speaking countries. For practicing essay writing and extending reading skills the novel "Selbs Mord" by Bernhard Schlink will be read.

The average student will be able to speak and give his/her opinion on more abstract topics in a coherent and intelligible way. Students’ listening comprehension should reach a level where they can understand the argument in a shorter debate on academic and cultural issues. Grammar revision will focus on transformation exercises which should demonstrate students’ comprehensive knowledge of German grammar.
