Description

This is the first of two advanced German language courses. The course aims at improving the students' all-round knowledge of contemporary German including knowledge of stylistic and regional variation.

The course aims at improving the students’ all-round knowledge of everyday contemporary German by offering a balanced programme of practice in all four main language skills. The classes will be conducted in German, except for grammar explanations provided in English. Each term we will have three or four topics of interest, such as environment or foreigners in Germany. Students will read a number of texts, ranging from magazine and newspaper articles on current events to short stories and songs including one  “easy reader” of a longer German fictional text (“Ferienlektüre” ) This material forms the basis of  the vocabulary building exercises as well as the discussions in class. Students will also have regular vocabulary quizzes and grammar assignments. Topics for group representations refer to selected texts from the reader.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course you will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course you should be able to read articles from Der Spiegel and other German news magazines, as well as samples of contemporary prose texts of average difficulty. Students will practice writing intensively and should be able to write essays using newly acquired vocabulary as well as fairly complex sentence structure. You will be able to engage in a conversation on a specified range of topics with moderate fluency. You will also be able to distinguish levels stylistic variation in German and identify some features of regional variation.
