Students will critically examine and debate a range of health issues they have encountered in earlier courses, through the media and in their internships. Students will analyse the determinants influencing health issues, and the related implications for a diverse range of people, including recognition of intersectionality and health inequities. They will provide recommendations for addressing issues and enhancing wellbeing through effective health education strategies.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Critically examine societal, interpersonal and personal factors contributing to an identified health issue and the implications of the issue for those affected. 2. Critically examine data, research and relevant policies and legislation regarding the issue within Aotearoa/New Zealand.3. Justify, and support with evidence, recommendations for future action that could achieve more equitable health outcomes for people who are affected.4. Determine how health education can be an empowering and emancipatory experience for diverse learners by examining a range of critical pedagogies in health education.5. Demonstrate the interpersonal and facilitation skills required for working with people in culturally responsive ways.
60 points at 200 level including 15 points of HLED courses or by approval from the Head of School.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
