HLTH442 is a level 8 course, which examines evidence based knowledge relating to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), Integrated Medicine (IM) and Traditional/Indigenous Health Practices within Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants will explore how evidence based knowledge is created through exploration of research designs, methodology and ethical considerations as applicable to CAM/IM/Traditional/Indigenous health practices. Participants can explore an individual topic of interest through assessments, which involve interpreting and synthesising extant knowledge to enhance practice or awareness.
1. Critically examine the nature of CAM/IM/Traditional and Indigenous health care knowledge and practices from a local and global perspective2. Critically review the extant knowledge and evidence of a selected CAM/IM/Traditional or indigenous health care practice. 3. Analyse ethical, cultural and socio-economic aspects of conducting and utilising research evidence related to CAM/IM/Traditional/and Indigenous health care practices4. Critically review a CAM/IM/Traditional or Indigenous healthcare practice research methodology from a world view and discuss how this can contribute to further evidence in this area.

This course will be online only in 2023 and will include online engagement with the lecturer, guest speakers and class participants. All lectures will be recorded and accessible via the Learn site. Fortnightly zoom drop in sessions will be available as well as the pre-recorded content. In addition to the online engagement students will be able to have 1:1 sessions with the lecturer to discuss their own work.
