Description

This course is designed around four themes: understanding and caring for self, understanding others; caring for the person, family and whanau living with a terminal illness; the practice of palliative care (therapeutic interventions and treatment modalities); creating and maintaining a centre of excellence and learning. It provides knowledge that is foundational to practice in the area, and introduces the participant to relevant theory, research and critical reflection that is deemed essential to palliative care practice.

Learning Outcomes

1.Critically analyse the application of relevant theory and philosophy, for the provision of holistic palliative care.
2. Critically reflect on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and working with diversity in relation to providing culturally appropriate palliative care.
3. Demonstrate speciality palliative care knowledge and skills in assessment and clinical judgement for patient, family and whanau care.
4. Critically reflect on the therapeutic use of self, including strategies to develop professional resilience.
5. Demonstrate clinical leadership by critically reflecting on your own professional role as part of the interprofessional team.

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Annotated bibliography 06 Mar 2024 15% This assessment provides the student the opportunity to critically review at least six research articles on palliative care from reputable literature sources.
Evidence Based Practice - Case Study 28 Mar 2024 45% This assessment provides the student with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth study of a person receiving hospice/palliative care.
Reflective Practice 03 May 2024 40% This assessment consists of a critical reflection of a critical incident from hospice/palliative care practice.
