This course uses theory to illuminate the functioning and processes of change within and across family, organisation, community and global systems. In addition to critically examining the relationship between oppression, empowerment and change in human systems, the course broadly considers ethical values and the legal obligations of human service delivery systems.
This course uses theoretical concepts and perspectives to explore the functioning and processes of change within and across interpersonal, organisation, community and global settings. Learning Objectives:• To encourage students to critically think about social change and the implications for human services• To introduce students to the practical and theoretical considerations inherent in working withincommunity and global settings• To critically consider the significance of diversity in the analysis of social change, inequality and empowerment.• To facilitate a beginning level of competence in research and to encourage students to become research producers. • To critically engage with current research and the application of research in human service settings
On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate: Knowledge about social change processes and their implications for human servicesCritical understanding of the practical and theoretical considerations inherent in working withincommunity and global level settingsThe ability to critically consider the relevance of interrelated categories of experience, including race, class, and gender, on social change and empowerment Development of critical analysis and reflexive skills. The capacity to critically examine the relationship between oppression, empowerment and change in human systems.Understanding of the debates concerning ethical values and legal obligations for human services
HSRV204 and any 15 points at 200 level from HSRV or SOWK, orany 60 points at 200 level from the Schedule V of the BA.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
