Description

The overall aim of INFO123 is to introduce students to business information systems and technology and develop a working knowledge of computer systems, business applications and information technology needed by intelligent users and managers. This course will build a practical and theoretical foundation for future study and careers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the student should be able to:
*  Have a user perspective of commercial computing systems and their impact on an organisation's decision-making and problem-solving in a competitive environment.
*  Describe business information systems and understand basic systems terminology and definitions including differentiating between the system, its components and its environment.
*  Describe and use Porter's five-force model and responses strategies for evaluating and addressing competitive pressures.
*  Discuss the selection of appropriate hardware and software for use in specific applications.
*  Differentiate between data and information and be able to describe and apply key database concepts to organising data in a database.
*  Describe various aspects of and technologies associated with the WWW and the Internet.
*  Discuss telecommunications networks, applications to business settings, and emerging trends.
*  Describe major business models, trends, issues and success factors associated with e-Commerce systems.
*  Describe key business information systems, including customer relationships management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), e-Collaboration systems, ERP.
*  Discuss decision support systems, expert systems and other types of artificial intelligence systems, and discuss their selection and uses.
*  Gain a clear understanding of the systems development process; understand success factors associated with systems development; recognise the relative merits of the various build and buy options, including traditional systems development, prototyping and outsourcing.
*  Understand the impact of modern information systems on business and society, including the security and ethical problems they pose.
*  Gain competence with spreadsheet and database software (i.e. MS Excel, MS Access).
*  Create a presentation using presentation software e.g. MS Powerpoint.
*  Use good presentation skills to deliver a professional presentation to an audience.

Timetable Note

Lab tutorials meet in computer labs.  They meet for one hour per week during most weeks.  These sessions will help students develop skills in various applications including MS Excel, MS Access and MS Powerpoint.

Discussion tutorials are in addition to the lab tutorials and lectures.  These meet for one hour per week during most weeks. These sessions provide the opportunity to address your questions in a small group.

To pass INFO123 you have to:
a)  gain a mark for the semester as a whole of 50% or more (but the department reserves the right to move this 50% threshold slightly up or down to ensure fairness).
b)  satisfy the '45% rule' of the ACIS Department. This means that in order to pass the course as a whole you must average not less than 45% over the invigilated components of your assessments. For the semester as a whole you could get more than 50% yet still be awarded a D grade (a fail). In INFO123 the invigilated components include 2 computer lab tests, presentation and feedback, the mid-semester test and the final exam.
