Description

The overall aim of INFO123 is to introduce students to business information systems and technology and develop a working knowledge of computer systems, business applications and information technology needed by intelligent users and managers. This course will build a practical and theoretical foundation for future study and careers.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course the student should be able to:
  • Have an understanding of what are business information systems (IS), the role and impact of IS on business and society and how IS can be used for competitive advantage.
  • Describe key concepts, components, technologies and selection criteria associated with the use of IS (e.g. hardware, software, networks and data communication).
  • Describe and apply key database concepts to organising, managing and using data in a database  
  • Recognise key business information systems (e.g. Collaboration Systems, ERP, CRM, SCM, Business Intelligence), and various aspects, technologies and trends associated with eCommerce and the Internet (e.g. Web 2.0, social networking)
  • Have a clear understanding of key business processes and the IS development process.
  • Discuss key issues associated with managing IS in organisations including the security and ethical problems they pose.
  • Gain competence with presentation, spread-sheet and database software (i.e. MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access).
  • Use good presentation skills to create and deliver a professional presentation to an audience.

Timetable Note

Lab tutorials meet in computer labs.  They meet for one hour per week during most weeks.  These sessions will help students develop skills in various applications including MS Excel, MS Access and MS Powerpoint.

Discussion tutorials are in addition to the lab tutorials and lectures.  These meet for one hour per week during most weeks.  These sessions provide the opportunity to address your questions in a small group.
