The aim of this course is to provide an avenue to understanding the relationship amongst contemporary visual culture, media production and elements of contemporary Japanese culture, particularly as they relate to anime. It will examine a variety of media content, cultural practices and aesthetics that emerged in Japanese animation and game design in the postwar period, enhancing students understanding of, on the one hand, the intersection between the art and aesthetics of Japanese anime and digital media production, and on the other hand, contemporary Japanese culture and society.
