The general principles of criminal liability. The law relating to indictable and other selected offences chargeable under New Zealand law. Procedure on indictment and summary procedure (excluding evidence).The aims of the course are:• to give students a critical understanding of the main features of the criminal law of New Zealand;• to introduce students to the main features of legal procedure relevant to criminal cases;• to introduce students to issues to be considered in any reform of the criminal law.
The objects of the course are: to allow students to develop an ability to appreciate how, and in what circumstances the legal principles of the criminal law apply; to allow students to understand the impact of existing rules of law or proposed changes.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:

Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.
