Description

An introduction to the law relating to Maori land and related resources.

An introduction to the legal framework relating to Māori land.

This course focuses on the Law relating to Māori land and management; history of Māori land legislation Māori Land Court proceedings and proposals for future utilisation.

Attendance at lectures is recommended for satisfactory completion of the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students who successfully complete this course will:
  • Develop foundational knowledge of Māori land law, practice and procedures;
  • Develop the ability to question and critique the law relating to Māori land;
  • Develop general learning and research skills;
  • Describe and apply legal principles relevant to Māori land;
  • Understand and explain customary Māori concepts relevant to Māori land and Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi);
  • Develop skills and confidence to provide effective, practical and feasible advice to whānau, hapū and iwi for the management of Māori land.

Mead, Sidney M; Tikanga Māori : living by Māori values ; Revised edition; Huia Publishers, 2016.

Other readings will be provided in the course outline. You will be expected to read relevant sections of statutes and the cases, journal articles, and book chapters. These will be provided for you on LEARN.
