Description

An introduction to ethical theories and their applicability to legal practice. The concept of a profession and the duties and responsibilities of lawyers.

An introduction to the professional and ethical responsibilities of lawyers in the practice of law.  The course will include a philosophical analysis of the roles and functions of lawyers and the role of the law society.  The course will also address the ethical and legal duties owed by lawyers to their clients such as the duties of loyalty, confidence, competence and disclosure.  The duties of an advocate to the court and his or her client will also be addressed.

Assessment

The course assessment will consist of:

a 3,000 word essay (worth 25%), due 12 noon, Thursday 16 December 2010; and

a three-hour Test (Open Book) to be held on Thursday 27 January 2011, 9.30am-12.30pm (worth 75%).
