This course introduces students to the study of the English Language, its words, sounds and sentences. It also introduces the conceptual and analytical tools which linguists use to understand how languages are constructed.
This course is designed to introduce you to the English language and to basic concepts in Linguistics. It aims to make explicit some of the properties of the language which you as speakers know implicitly. It is intended as an introductory course and will assume no prior knowledge about how languages work. In 2008 ling101 will be offered for the first time by distance learning in semester one. That means you do not have to be at the University of Canterbury campus, or in Christchurch or in New Zealand to take the course. Distance students will have special learning resources made available to them such as online quizzes, worksheets, tutor assistance, a course manual and lectures on mp3 and cd. This course covers the same material as listed in ling101-08S1(C).
