This course offers you the opportunity to discover the principles behind the way in which speakers of a language combine words into phrases and sentences. We will take a scientific look at utterances you encounter in everyday life, and you will learn to use tree diagrams to represent the structural patterns you find.
This course introduces grammatical structures in both morphology (words) and syntax (sentences). Both types of structure are essential parts of how languages encode meaning. The goal of the course is to understand both the range of structures that are found in language as well as how morphological and syntactic structure interacts. The course introduces different empirical methods for uncovering grammatical structure: introspection, corpus data, and psycholinguistic experiments.
Through their experiences with this course, students will be able to:Describe morpho-syntactic patterns in language dataApply methods of morpho-syntactic analysis to samples of real-world language use Identify and categorize morpho-syntactic structures using evidence-based methodsFormulate an original linguistic analysis of an extended discourseDefend their original analysis using evidence-based methods
