## Description

An introductory course in calculus and linear algebra that is designed primarily for students who have done well in Level 3 NCEA Mathematics, covering single variable calculus and basic ideas in linear algebra. The mathematics in this course has applications in many areas of science and commerce.

The work in MATH102 is based around the fundamental ideas in linear algebra and calculus which students started studying at school. MATH102 can be taken as a standalone course or as the first part of a core mathematics programme.

Topics:
Linear equations and matrices; Numbers, Functions, and Limits; Differentiation and applications; Integration and applications.

## Learning Outcomes

• Students who have succeeded in this course will be able to:

• Define the key concepts in:
- solving systems of linear equations
- matrix algebra
- functions and their inverses
- single-variable calculus

• Describe and interpret:
- the connection between matrices and linear systems
- solutions of linear systems geometrically, and in context
- graphs and  properties of functions
- the key theorems of calculus
- the relationships between differential and integral calculus.

• Use techniques from the course to:
- solve systems of linear equations
- evaluate limits of functions and solve continuity problems
- find derivatives and use them in a variety of applications
- find integrals and use them in a variety of applications.

• Identify the appropriate method of solution for problems in linear algebra and calculus.

## Prerequisites

1. MATH101, or
2. NCEA 14 Credits at level 3 Mathematics, or
3. Cambridge: D at A level or an A at AS level in Mathematics, or
4. IB: 4 at HL or 5 at SL in Mathematics, or
5. Approval of the Head of School based on alternative prior learning.

To obtain a clear pass in this course, you must both pass the course as a whole and also obtain at least 40% in the final examination.
