Covering business law structures and regulations this course provides students with the insight, understanding and practical skills to develop strategic direction and solve business problems while effectively adhering to legal requirements.
This course covers the legal structures and rules which control and direct organisations in New Zealand. It looks at the formation and implementation of law, considering the role that Parliament and the Courts play in the derivation and enforcement of the legal system. By applying this advanced knowledge to their general business understanding the student will gain the ability to understand and manage the structures and demands of the legal system within their Professional career.
At the end of this course, students will be able to: • demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the legal rules applying in a number of core substantive business areas, and account for their evolution. • distinguish between common and equity law and be able to classify, distinguish and use appropriate legal terminology. • demonstrate knowledge of the theory of separation of power and governmental accountability. • demonstrate an ability to describe how an Act of Parliament is passed and be able to read and interpret such Act. • describe the fundamental rights which apply to the business environment, including the unique significance of the Treaty of Waitangi. • identify specific legal rules which apply to a number of organisational situations and explain how the legal system drives management decision making. • describe the fundamental principle of contract law and demonstrate an understanding of how these principles apply in practice. • critically analyse the fundamental and consequent issues surrounding Contract Law • apply the law to defined problems and provide recommended actions and solutions.

Assessment in Te Reo Māori In recognising that Te Reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand, the University provides for students who may wish to use the Te Reo Māori in their assessment. If you intend to submit your work in Te Reo Māori you are required to do the following: Read the Assessment in Te Reo Māori Policy and ensure that you meet the conditions set out in the policy. This includes, but is not limited to, informing the Course Coordinator 1) no later than 10 working days after the commencement of the course that you wish to use Te Reo Māori and 2) at least 15 working days before each assessment due date that you wish to use Te Reo Māori.
