Description

This course focuses on identification and investigation of a real world problem (or opportunity) impacting individuals, organizations and/or the wider society. It provides an opportunity to develop and apply advanced analytical, theoretical and practically relevant business and information-systems related insight and competencies that can address the problem.

MBIS673 is an Applied IS Research project course in which students undertake a research project that has both academic and practical implications. The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate advanced analytical, theoretical and practically applied information-systems related insight and competencies. It provides students with an opportunity to challenge and extend the boundaries of what is known and make a contribution to the field. Students are expected to be independent learners and negotiate relationships with other postgraduate students and the contexts in which they will carry out their research.

The applied research project that underpins this course will reinforce and advance the knowledge gained from other MBIS and graduate courses by providing students with the opportunity to foster the further development of knowledge and/or expertise gained in relation to the field of information systems in a problem-solving, research-based setting. The main deliverables of this course may also go some way in advancing academic (theoretical) and practical (context- specific) knowledge.

By completing the MBIS673 project, the student will achieve the learning outcomes set out below. These learning outcomes are consistent with NZQA’s Level 9 descriptor. As part of these learning outcomes, the student will be exposed to contemporary theory and/or practice in their chosen topic.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts, frameworks and/or industry practice within a specific research area in the field of information systems (IS).
2. Evaluate the contributions of others and identify and assess opportunities for further work in the IS area.
3. Demonstrate analytical, research and problem-solving skills by exploring and addressing an IS -related topic (i.e. issue or opportunity).
4. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding about the latest findings in their chosen topic area
