Provide advanced analytical, theoretical and practically applied business insight and competencies in the areas relevant to the learning objective of the programme.
In MBUS681, students will undertake a consultancy type project for a client that has both academic and practical implications. This is a Masters level course and students are expected to be independent learners, take the initiative when required including managing relationships with staff, other postgraduate students and the organisations for which the students will undertake their project. Each student will be assigned an academic staff member from the UC Business School to supervise their project. Each student should meet with their supervisor at the beginning of the project and then at regular intervals as agreed between student and supervisor. The supervisor will guide the student as they develop their research proposal and then carry out their project. In developing their proposal, the student and supervisor should discuss their expectations regarding project deliverables, estimated workload, meetings with the supervisor, and professional and ethical conduct.Students will be working with an organisation on a specific issue. It will be important to maintain good levels of communication with project sponsors and students are expected to take responsibility for this. The Business School Postgraduate Learn page contains documents related to student and sponsor organisation obligations, as well as confidentiality. As representatives of the University of Canterbury, students are expected to act in a professional and ethical manner as they carry out their projects. They should be respectful and mindful of the host organisation’s policies, rules and culture.Students who need to collect data from people (e.g. interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, surveys, etc.) may require approval from the UC Human Ethics Committee (HEC). Data can be collected without HEC approval under certain circumstances. There are links to HEC information, including UC HEC’s policy and application documents, on the MBUS681 and Business School Postgraduate Learn page.
