An introduction to the fundamental principles of management related to the functional areas of planning, organising, leading and controlling, as well as an introduction to how organisations are linked to the New Zealand and global business environment.
MGMT100 is an introductory course and forms a part of the core of the Bachelor of Commerce degree. This course complements the other core courses in Accounting, Economics, Information Systems and Statistics/quantitative business methods, by emphasising the importance of human resources and organisational processes in a modern organisational context.The objective of this course is to introduce students to the principles of general management theory and to explain the interface between management and the business environment. Key aspects of the functional areas of management will be introduced (i.e., planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the use of economic and human resources to accomplish organisational goals), and the nature of organisational processes will be explained (e.g., processes related to organisational design such as decision making, leadership and communication.) The interface with the business environment will also provide students with a broad introduction to the current New Zealand and international business conditions, organisational cultures, marketing, social responsibility and business ethics. As a foundation course, MGMT100 covers the range of issues that managers face with respect to the administrative, socio-political and cultural challenges of management. The concepts introduced are relevant to all aspects of managing an organisation including: human resource management, organisational planning and design, strategic management, operations management, and marketing. Students will learn about the science of management from research in fields such as strategic management, human resource management, marketing, and operations management.
