An introduction to the fundamental principles of management related to the functional areas of planning, organising, leading and controlling, as well as an introduction to how organisations are linked to the New Zealand and global business environment.
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the principles of general management theory and to explain the interface between management and the business environment. Key aspects of the functional areas of management will be introduced (i.e., planning, organising, leading, and controlling the use of economic and human resources to accomplish organisational goals), and the nature of organisational processes will be explained (e.g., processes related to organisational design such as decision making, leadership and innovation.) The interface with the business environment will also provide students with a broad introduction to the current Aotearoa New Zealand and international business conditions, organisational cultures, marketing, social responsibility and business ethics. As a foundation course, MGMT100 covers the range of issues that managers face with respect to the administrative, socio-political and cultural challenges of management. The concepts introduced are relevant to all aspects of managing an organisation including: Human Resource Management, organisational planning and design, strategic management, operations management, and marketing. These concepts reflect the organisation’s ability to deliver goods or services that customers want as a result of the decisions and behaviours of all its members: top managers who plan the organisation’s strategy, middle managers who coordinate human and economic resources, and supervisors and workers who are engaged in production activities.
Recognise the principles of planning, organising, leading and controlling in management.Apply management concepts to analyse and reflect on key organisational and managerial issue. Understand the bicultural, local and global environmental context in which organisations operate. Understand how social, cultural and ethical perspectives can influence the understanding of a given management-related issue. Enhance awareness of Treaty of Waitangi principles as they are applied in business and management in Aotearoa New Zealand.Enhance teamwork and written communication skills.
