Description

Organisations are the basic building blocks of economy and society. They furnish the context in which human resources are employed and developed. Organising is a set of processes that involve choices concerning the attributes of an organisation. In this course, we study the options available to managers with respect to organisational structures, procedures, integration, and control. The result of good choices is an organisational design that is adaptable and innovative, and, therefore, a source of competitive advantage.

Learning Outcomes

  • This course
  • highlights the complexities of organisation design in an environment of limited resources, variable tasks, and diverse individuals;
  • discusses the basic concepts and tools of organisation and organising; and
  • shows the usefulness of taking a contextual and contingency perspective on management and organisation design.

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
  • understand the difference between organisation and organising;
  • analyse the organisational environment as a set of constraints and opportunities;
  • understand the criteria for evaluating organisational effectiveness; and
  • critically evaluate organisations as building blocks of economy and society.
