Description

Responsible Leadership is designed to study advanced leadership theory (on, for example, inclusive, responsible and shared leadership) and build practical leadership capabilities.

In the course we evaluate advanced leadership theory and build practical leadership capabilities. The course addresses the topic of leadership in relation to the responsibility of the leader towards various stakeholders (e.g. employees, shareholders, community, suppliers, and environment) in both national and international context. We make use of cutting edge examples of New Zealand and overseas best practice.

The effective management and sustainability of the human resource as a source of competitive advantage is, or should be, a major concern of any organisation. In recent years, that process has become known as strategic human resource management (SHRM). This course stresses critical thinking and reflection on a number of important issues related to SHRM. In addition, an independent study project on a SHRM topic will be required. Students will periodically be asked to present their progress to date on the independent study work.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
1. Gain a broader conceptual understanding of strategic human resource management.
2. Gain a broader understanding of specific strategic issues and their relationship to SHRM, such as the resource-based view of the firm, obtaining competitive advantage from the firm's human resource, appropriate HR "fit" under differing strategic conditions, and global implications for HR practices.
3. Demonstrate understanding of the above areas through responses to discussion questions and in-class presentations.
4. Demonstrate the ability to research, analyse, and synthesise material related to a SHRM issue through their independent study project.
