Description

Development of knowledge of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and the fundamentals of using computers for digital sampling, mixing and editing. Developing skills in the use of computer-based music notation technologies.

This course teaches practical skills in digital sound for musicians, filmmakers, game
developers, aspiring “bedroom producers,” and anyone interested in working with sound in
the digital domain. Students learn how to edit and manipulate sound and MIDI files in a
Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), how to match sounds with moving images, and
fundamental concepts and terminology that enable them to communicate effectively with
music technology experts. Instruction includes lectures and hands-on studio tutorial sessions.
• Fundamentals of digital audio recording and editing
• Efficient and creative use of industry standard DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations),
including Avid ProTools and Logic Pro
• Matching sound to action
• Sound design skills
• Creating music with MIDI and virtual (software-based) instruments
• Microphone types and uses
• Managing signal flow and analogue to digital conversion
• Optimal audio configuration in the Mac OSX operating system

Learning Outcomes
