Students develop technical skills in an instrument or voice, music knowledge and understanding through performance on an instrument or with voice, and develop a knowledge of the repertoire for that specific instrument or voice. This course is only available to students in the Mus.B.

The course aims to develop technical skills, musical knowledge and understanding of an instrument or voice, through regular lessons, practice and rehearsals that lead to two (or more) public perfor-mances through the semester. The course also develops knowledge of repertoire for the specific in-strument or voice, as well as a working knowledge of chamber and ensemble music that includes it.
To support the public performance skills expected of the student, attendance is required at a weekly Combined Performance Workshop (Monday 6:30-8pm); also required is attendance at a Perfor-mance Class related specifically to their instrument/voice; and the students are also expected to be available for at least four of the Friday lunchtime (1:10-2pm) concerts held in the Arts Centre Recit-al Room to perform and/or support (by listening to) their community of fellow students, perfor-mance staff and selected guests.
All these activities are subject to what is advisable under COVID conditions.  
This is the first course in a sequence that leads the student towards MUSA342, in which the student will be expected to demonstrate a superior professional level of performance.

Timetable Note

Student workload (150 hours) reflects the intensity of this course, and is allocated:
• 12 hours attending lessons
• 36 hours attending Performance Workshop (Wednesday 5:00-6:30pm) / other performance classes and/or masterclasses
• 4 – 12 hours attending and/or performing at UC Friday lunchtime concerts
• 90 – 116 hours individual practice, rehearsals and performances

Teacher's Grade 30% The teacher’s grade will consider such things as: an assessment of punctuality and reliability in attending lessons, consistency of practice and learning through the semester, growth of the student’s technical mastery, and breadth of engagement with the repertoire. The teacher’s grade could also include assessments from one or more technical exams set during the semester.
