Description

Learn how to score and arrange for symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, and large ensembles.

In this course you will learn how to score and arrange for symphony orchestra. You will gain detailed
knowledge of the different instruments and sections of the orchestra, their timbral possibilities, and
learn how to control balance and colour in a variety of musical textures. You will also learn about
how to prepare a professional orchestral score, and optimize your workflow using industry-standard
notation software.

Learning Outcomes

  • After successful completion of this course, you will:
  • Have detailed knowledge of the ranges and capabilities of the instruments and sections of a
    symphony orchestra;
  • Be able to orchestrate from piano score to orchestra;
  • Be able to transcribe and arrange musical material for orchestra;
  • Understand modern notation conventions and best practices for orchestral scoring;
  • Know how to prepare a professional orchestral score and parts using industry standard
    notation software.

Two significant and contrasting orchestration / arranging tasks worth 50% each. One of the assignments must be a notated orchestration of a work to be decided in consultation with the course lecturers; the other can be an orchestration or an arrangement.
