This course reviews the evolution of jazz as an art form from its earliest origins, through a study of the personalities, styles and key elements, to its emergence as a major international musical phenomenon.
The focus of the course is on the many social, cultural, racial and musical influences which have contributed to the development of Jazz as a definable genre. The historic events and personalities determining many current jazz practices are reviewed in chronological order. Throughout the course, recordings (audio and visual) of major jazz performers are used to illustrate principal elements and students should expect to engage in extensive listening, background reading and web links to gather and present essential information.
