This course focuses on tonal music theory including elementary acoustics, pitch, interval, rhythm, metre, scales, triads, textures, part-writing, melodic figuration and dissonance, together with aural and sight-singing skills.Aural and sightsinging skillsThe aural component includes the development of melodic and rhythmic memory and perception such as the ability to notate simple extracts of not more than 8 bars in length. Harmonic perception includes the recognition of basic chords in root position and first inversion together with cadences in major and minor keys.The singing component includes the ability to sightsing a simple melody and to pitch simple intervals.

Extra tutorials will be held for those students who have more limited music background. In addition, Practica Musica and Auralia software is available for use in the School of Music Computer laboratory (Room 339 Maths and Computer Science building).
