Description

The treatment of electricity and magnetism from observed phenomena through to the Maxwell equations in integral form; magnetic and dielectric properties of materials.

This course builds on the foundation of first year electricity and magnetism by extending the concepts and principles to a greater depth.

Starting with topics in electrostatics such as Gauss's Law in dielectrics and capacitance, the course moves through current electricity (Ohms Law, Amperes Law, Faradays Law) to redefine those fundamental equations as Maxwell's Equations in integral form.

A separate section then discusses the dielectric and magnetic properties of matter. Topics include dielectric-polarisation, temperature dependence of susceptibility, dependence of refractive index on frequency. Also discussed are diamagnetism, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism, and MRI scanning.

Prerequisites

PHYS114 or PHYS115 or PHYS116
MATH105 or MATH106 or MATH108 or MATH116. These prerequisites may be replaced by a high level of achievement in NCEA (Bursary, prior to 2004) Physics and Mathematics with Calculus, or
an equivalent background to be determined in each case by the HOD.
